Your manuscript is finished

Publishing should not become a second full-time job.

Formatting is where many authors discover that a Word document and a finished book are not the same thing.

DesignDusk handles the technical layout so you can focus on final checks, your launch and reaching readers.

01

Inconsistent pages

Chapter headings, spacing, indents, fonts and scene breaks change throughout the manuscript.

02

Confusing print requirements

Trim size, margins, bleed, gutters, headers and page numbering are difficult to set correctly.

03

Ebook conversion problems

A layout that looks fine in Word can break when readers change font size or use another device.

04

Upload warnings

KDP or IngramSpark reports margin, font, image or page-size issues you do not know how to fix.

05

Cover spine uncertainty

The full paperback cover cannot be sized correctly until the interior page count is final.

Ebook + Print Formatting

Prepare both editions together and finish with the page count needed for your paperback cover.

  • Print interior and ebook files
  • Coordinated style across formats
  • Final print page-count confirmation
  • File-related upload support

Every book is quoted individually. Books with tables, footnotes, poetry or illustrations take more work than a straight novel, so the price should reflect the actual book rather than a fixed package.

The difference formatting makes

Your manuscript should feel like a real book.

Good formatting is quiet. Readers notice the story, not broken spacing or headings that change halfway through.

What we need from you

You do not need to understand publishing specifications. A few basic details are enough for us to recommend the right setup.

  • Your edited manuscript in DOCX format
  • Approximate word count or page count
  • Book type: novel, memoir, nonfiction, poetry or illustrated
  • Formats needed: ebook, paperback, hardcover or a combination
  • Preferred trim size, if you have already chosen one
  • Target platform, such as KDP or IngramSpark
Need a cover too?

Finish the interior, then size the print cover correctly.

Once formatting confirms the final page count, your paperback spine can be prepared accurately. Choose an exclusive ready-made design or commission a cover around your manuscript.

Common questions

Book Formatting FAQs

What does formatting cost?

Every book is quoted individually. A straight novel is quicker than a workbook full of tables, and a poetry collection needs different handling again, so a fixed price list would either overcharge simple books or underquote complex ones. Send your details through the form and we will reply with a scope and a fixed quote before any work starts.

How long does formatting take?

It depends on the book and on what else is in the queue, so your quote comes with a delivery date rather than a guess. A straightforward novel does not take long. Books with images, tables or verse take longer. If you are working to a launch date, say so in the form and we will tell you plainly whether it is doable.

What files will I receive?

A print-ready PDF sized to your trim size for paperback or hardcover, and a reflowable EPUB for ebook stores, depending on what you order. These are the files KDP and IngramSpark actually ask for at upload.

What format should my manuscript be in?

Word (.docx) is ideal. Google Docs works too, we simply export it. PDFs and Scrivener projects are trickier because the text often needs rebuilding first, so those are reviewed individually before we quote.

What is the difference between print and ebook formatting?

Print formatting creates fixed pages for a specific trim size. Ebook formatting is usually reflowable, which lets readers change the font size and read on different devices.

Should the manuscript be edited before formatting?

Yes. Formatting should normally begin after editing is complete. Small corrections can be handled during proof review, but heavy rewriting after layout may mean the files have to be formatted again.

Can you format books for KDP and IngramSpark?

The page size, margins and export settings are prepared around the platform you name in your brief. Tell us every platform you plan to use before work begins.

How many rounds of corrections are included?

One round of corrections on the formatted proof is included in the quote. Fixing typos, spacing and layout points at that stage is normal. Rewriting sections after the layout is built is new work and is quoted separately.

Do you format book series or multiple books?

Yes. Put the details of each book in one enquiry and we will quote them together. Books in the same series are styled to match, so the interiors feel consistent from one book to the next.

When can the paperback cover be created?

The ebook front can be designed earlier, but the full paperback wrap needs the final trim size, paper choice and formatted page count so the spine width is accurate.

Do you format poetry, images, tables or footnotes?

Yes, but complex books are reviewed individually because their layout needs vary. Send sample pages so the scope and quote can be confirmed accurately.

Can you design my cover as well?

Yes, covers are our main craft. You can pick an exclusive ready-made design from the shop or commission a custom one, and because we would also know your final page count, the paperback spine comes out right the first time.

Do you provide editing or ISBNs?

No. Formatting starts after your editing is done, and we do not sell ISBNs. KDP will give you a free one, or you can buy your own from your national agency; our ISBN guide on the blog explains the difference and when it matters.

What happens if a publishing platform reports an error?

Send us the exact warning or a screenshot. Genuine problems caused by the file we delivered are corrected as part of the job. We do not log into your publishing accounts, so you stay in control of your own KDP and IngramSpark dashboards.
